The themes of love and death are plentifully reflected in the art of the Italian renaissance: by writers such as Boccacio and Dante but also in the music of the great composers of the time.  This program demonstrates how celebrated composers such as Claudio Monteverdi, Andrea Gabrieli, Tomás Luis de Victoria and Carlo Gesualdo drew heavily on the subjects both in their church music and in madrigals meant for private performances.

Andrea Gabrieli (1557-1612) Tirsi morir volea

Claudio Monteverdi Si ch’io vorrei morire
